Sourcing sustainable solutions to minimize environmental impact

Chandos has built one of the largest residential geoexchange fields in Canada.

In partnership with the City of Edmonton and Blatchford, the downtown development aims to be one of the largest sustainable communities in the world. The completion of the geoexchange field - part of a District Energy Sharing System (DESS) that will provide heat, cooling, and hot water to buildings in the community - is an important step towards making Blatchford's vision a reality. 

When Great Canadian Solar approached Chandos about using a mobile solar power unit to provide power during construction, the team jumped on the opportunity to add to its sustainable building methods on this inspiring project. And the results speak for themselves: the mobile solar power unit diverted over 6,500 litres of diesel and offset 3.5 tons of carbon dioxide from the project site. In addition to the impact made by solar power, Chandos diverted more than 94 per cent of construction waste from the landfill.

We are always looking for opportunities to reduce our impact on the environment. “As a B Corp, we look at how a project like this is diverting waste. This is not only good for the environment but also good for the business,” says Jen Hancock, Director of Innovative Construction at Chandos.
