The Intact Building

Edmonton, Alberta

This complex renovation and expansion involved stripping down an existing 11-storey cast in place building to the concrete skeleton and constructing a structural steel office tower with a cast-in-place parkade expansion. The existing precast facade of the building was removed to receive the new steel structure and curtain wall. We completed new mechanical and electrical upgrades as well as washroom and elevator upgrades in the interior. The location of this project presented many challenges including a tight site with limited mobilization, a LRT tunnel and power duct banks below grade, overhead power and trolley bus lines above grade, and busy pedestrian and vehicular traffic on Jasper Avenue and 108 Street.

A tower crane was used for steel erection and hoisting of concrete. The utmost care and attention had to be paid during hoisting to the safety of the public and workers. Construction included two new elevator shafts from parkade to penthouse. The steel design included segmented curves. Throughout the course of this LEED® CS Gold Certified project we were responsible for coordinating the various sustainable strategies.
