Our team is completing a phased renovation of the 27,000 sq. ft. centre, which has served the City of Edmonton for over 50 years.
Recognized as an architectural icon, the building features a design that integrates glass, cables, concrete, and wood in a modernist or expressive style. Its exterior shape reflects the crest of a wave and the rolling prairie landscape, anchored into its surroundings by embedded concrete piers and cables. As part of the renovation, our team modernized the curved glass curtain walls, improving energy efficiency and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This upgrade will also improve building lifecycle sustainability and create a brighter and more comfortable environment for visitors.
A major component of the project is the replacement of the hyperbolic paraboloid roof. The team removed and replaced over 12,000 square feet of copper roofing on the complex, double-curved structure.
Inside the building, we enhanced accessibility by adding an elevator and ramps, upgraded the pools, and completed mechanical and HVAC improvements. These updates improve water quality, safety, and comfort for swimmers while ensuring the facility meets modern health and performance standards. Lighting enhancements create a safer and more welcoming atmosphere, and improvements to perimeter drainage will help preserve the longevity of the building.
Through these upgrades, we are ensuring that this facility continues to serve the Edmonton community for years to come. By modernizing key infrastructure, improving safety, and enhancing accessibility, the project will allow more people to enjoy the space while maintaining the historical and architectural significance of the centre.
