In 2016 the original Queen’s Park Arenex community centre collapsed in New Westminster, BC. Our Vancouver team built the 12,000 sq. ft. replacement Superstructure with enhanced facilities to better serve the community needs.
The new Sportsplex hosts a variety of programming spaces like basketball, gymnastics, trampolining, ball hockey, badminton, volleyball, and the popular playtime class: Motoring Munchkins. The pre-engineered recreation facility has a rigid frame, which is a load resisting structure to withstand the weight of heavy snowfall. The high-performance building envelope retains heat throughout the winter. The project team incorporated reclaimed timber from the original arenex in the office and cubby area. They also completed interior work on mechanical systems, installed LED lighting, gender neutral washrooms, new storage space for gymnastic equipment, a multi-use wooden sports floor, and exterior landscaping.
To reduce carbon emissions, the team built the New Westminster’s first municipally owned carbon neutral building with sustainable features like passive heating and cooling units, roof solar panels, and low-water consumption.
We worked closely in collaboration with the City of New Westminster, architectural consultants, and sub-trade partners, implementing elements of integrated project delivery (IPD), to outline roles and responsibilities of each partner and opportunities to adjust design plans for the client’s specific needs.
