The original aquatic centre the only public swimming pool that served Drayton Valley and Brazeau communities and had reached the end of its intended lifespan. Our team developed the new pool using integrated project delivery (IPD). The new facility features an eight-lane swim tank, leisure pool, lazy river, change rooms, administration offices, an upper deck fitness centre, multipurpose rooms, a hot tub, and storage.
To address supply chain challenges, the team worked closely with partners and vendors to pre-order materials to avoid delays. Our team used an off-site storage facility, which created a seamless flow during construction and kept the project on schedule. Using a robust procurement schedule, the team mitigated issues by starting pre-fabrication work when there were material delays.
Using pull planning, the team realized that installing the solar panels earlier than scheduled would allow the project to sell power back to the grid during construction. The team found that using a 304.32 kW solar PV system on the roof could generate up to 257,888 kW per year, reducing the municipality’s carbon footprint. Using the solar PV system offset about 147 metric tons of greenhouse gas emissions annually, which is the equivalent of removing 29 vehicles off the road!
Leveraging our pool expertise, we successfully designed a “pool turn-down system” that reduces the water exchange overnight. The pool turn-down system resulted in savings on water and electricity usage, as well as approximately $20,000 in annual operational costs for the town.
